Troop 850’s annual Dutch Oven Campout is scheduled for the weekend of February 9-11 at Camp Oyo near Portsmouth, Ohio. This is consistently one of the Scouts’ favorite campouts, and parents who attend are invariably impressed with the boy’s culinary prowess. We will be staying in the Blockhouse cabin (indoors!) which has a fireplace for heat, as well as a shelter in front that can be used for the cooking competition.
Scouts will spend Saturday blending, stirring, spicing, pureeing, and decorating a 3 course meal; each patrol will be tasked with conceiving and creating a main dish, a bread, and a dessert to share with the judges and the rest of the campers. Parents are encouraged to come and join in the fun and help create their own Dutch Oven feast. After sampling all of the culinary masterpieces, the judges will have the unenviable task of designating which patrol is the best of the best.
In addition to meal planning and cooking, time will be set aside to allow for Scouts to pursue advancement requirements, to play cards, and for a Saturday evening mass or a prayer service at the outdoor Camp Oyo Chapel. In years past, we have even had a Saturday evening movie, complete with popcorn. So wash your serving spoon, polish your dutch oven, and start your menu planning, Dutch Oven Campout time is here!
