New Membership Renewal Process for 2025

The national scouting organization has implemented a new system of membership renewal starting September 1, 2024. In the past, each troop or pack renewed both its own “charter” as well as all of its youth and adults’ memberships at the same time every year in the “rechartering” process. The Troop collected the national dues from all of its members and then paid them over to Dan Beard Council which in turn paid them over to National. As a result, we all were registered for the same annual period. Last year that occurred during the fall, effective November 1, 2023 through October 31, 2024 for everybody.

Now, all youth and adults will re-register online directly with National. Sometime soon you can expect to receive emails directly from National with a link to the membership renewal online portal. You will need to complete the process as soon as possible, but in any case, no later than October 31 of this year.  PLEASE NOTE: The email will come from noreply@scouting.org. We recommend that you whitelist this address in your email spam filter.

In some cases members who originally registered after rechartering last year, i.e. after October 31, 2023 will receive renewal emails around the one-year anniversary of their original registration.

The cost of the one-year membership renewal will now be $169.95 per Scout (or $185.40 for those subscribing to Scout Life magazine) and $73.13 per adult (or $88.58 for those subscribing to Scout Life). Payment will be made online directly to National. You can save the credit card transaction fees ($4.95 and $2.13 per Scout or adult, respectively) by going to the Scout Shop in Evendale and paying by check.

New Website Feature–Online Payments

We’ve added a new feature to the website! You will notice a new menu tab at the top of the homepage entitled “Online Payments”. There you will find a clickable link where you can pay for Troop events such as campouts, summer camp, high adventure, etc. by credit card, debit card or direct bank transfer (ACH). Alternatively, you can scan the QR code with your phone to make payments.

November Campout

Our next monthly campout will be the weekend of November 2-4, a backpacking weekend in the Lake Vesuvius Recreation Area of the Wayne National Forest (near Ironton, Ohio). This trip is open to all Scouts and adults with all levels of backpacking experience. We’ll have a challenging route for experienced backpackers and an easier route for novice backpackers. This will be a great opportunity to see what backpacking is all about if you’ve never done it before. For those lacking equipment, don’t let that stop you! The Troop has a collection of loaner equipment, and we know where else to borrow things if need be.

Permission slips are due October 30. Chas Hertlein can answer any questions, and we’ll be covering backpacking at the next couple of meetings.

New Youth Protection Requirements

Dear Scout Parents:

Earlier this year the National BSA  announced a couple of changes we will all need to bear in mind. First, they have totally revamped the online Youth Protection Training that all registered adults are required to take every two years. Formerly a single half-hour module, it has been expanded to three 25-minute modules plus a short test. Anyone who has not yet taken the new course is required to do so by October 31 this year! Detailed instructions on how to take the new course can be found here:

With our annual rechartering process coming up in November, we wanted to remind all registered adults to take the new training if you haven’t already done so.

Recent BSA Announcement

Dear Troop 850 Families & Friends:

I’m sure you all heard something about the recent announcement about the BSA to admit girls. Their official announcement appears below, in case you haven’t seen it. I wanted to clarify a few things for you. First and foremost, this change will not have any direct impact on Troop 850. They are not proposing to have girls join Boy Scout troops. What they are going to do is to roll out a parallel program for girls of Boy Scout age, and it will be up to each sponsoring organization (St. I in our case) to decide whether or not they wish to sponsor a separate girls’ troop (or whatever they choose to call the new units—that hasn’t been determined). It’s probably too early to say what St. Ignatius will choose to do in this regard, but in any case it really won’t affect Troop 850.

At the Cub Scout level, each Pack will have the option of organizing girls-only Dens which will operate separately from the existing boys-only Dens within the Pack. Alternatively, the sponsoring organization may elect to organize a separate girls-only Pack, or to do nothing at all. At this point we don’t know how St. Ignatius or Pack 850 will choose to proceed.

This was all a bit of a surprise to all of us, and was determined at the national level without any local input. Many details remain to be announced. Regardless, we will continue to operate a high-quality Boy Scouting program in Troop 850.

Chas Hertlein

Committee Chairman

Boy Scouts of America Welcomes Girls
It is with excitement and hope that I share with you that the BSA’s National Executive Board has unanimously approved welcoming girls into Cub Scouting and delivering a Scouting program for older girls (ages 11 to 18) that will enable them to advance and earn the highest rank of Eagle Scout.

The historic decision comes after years of receiving requests for such action from across the country, especially from families already in the BSA program with their sons. In coming to this decision, the BSA evaluated the results of numerous research efforts, gaining input from current members and leaders — including all BSA Councils across the country, as well as from parents not involved in Scouting — to understand how to offer families an important additional choice in meeting the character development needs of all their children.

As a chartered organization, you will continue to have the option of selecting those programs that best meet your goals for your youth. For instance, you may decide to have all-boy packs, all-girl packs, or packs with both girl dens and boy dens. As always, your organization will continue to have the ability to select and approve leaders.

We are excited about the opportunity to expand Scouting to deliver the ideals of the Scout Oath and Law to both boys and girls. You are critical in making that a reality and in meeting the needs of today’s youth and families.

Thank you for all you do for Scouting and our communities.

For more information about the expanded opportunities for family Scouting, please visit the family Scouting page, or contact Lee Shaw Jr., Director of National Alliances at lee.shaw@scouting.org with any questions.
