Below are 3 documents with details on Merit Badge Challenge (MBC) to be held February 1st, 15th, and 29th. Read the Troop 850 Letter first. I would like to receive all registration requests for review by November 19th. Registration opens on November 12th, so the sooner you choose your classes, the better chance of getting your first choices.
We will register together as a Troop, so please follow the instructions in the Troop 850 Letter, and do not mail in your registration.

The following are some upcoming or particularly notable 2019 dates for Troop 850 activities. Please note, based on the Scouts’ decisions at PLC in October a complete planned 2019 calendar has been added to the website, remember to check periodically for updates (which would also be announced at meetings.)
Some notes for upcoming deadlines, as well as for the 2019 calendar:
— Merit Badge Challenge choices will be available October 22 and registration begins on November 5…so look for an email with details after October 22.
— Camp Friedlander is asking for a deposit for each camper by January 1st, so we would like to begin estimating summer camp attendance as soon as possible.

TROOP 850 2018 HIGH ADVENTURE FACT SHEET
West Virginia Kayaking & Whitewater Rafting
When: Sunday, June 17 through Friday, June 22, 2018.
Where: On the New River in West Virginia, near the town of Lansing.
What: On the first day, we’ll drive to our destination, the Adventures on the Gorge outfitters where we will stay in their rustic cabins for two nights. On day two we’ll spend the day in a kayaking clinic on the river, learning (or re-learning) the techniques of safe whitewater kayaking. The next day we’ll be driven upriver with boats and gear and will begin our paddle back down the river for two days paddling and two nights camping on the riverbank, followed by a one-day whitewater raft trip down the lower New River. Excellent food to be provided and prepared by the guides along the way! Then back to the cabins at Adventures on the Gorge for one night and then drive home on Friday, June 22, 2018.
Eligibility: To be eligible for this trip a Scout:
- must in the Scoutmaster’s judgment have actively participated in the Troop’s program throughout the preceding year, at all times demonstrating Scout spirit
- must achieve the rank of at least First Class by April 30, 2018
- must earn Swimming Merit Badge and certain of the requirements for Whitewater Merit Badge (to be determined) by May 31, 2018 (opportunities to do so will be made available)
- must be at least 13 years of age by June 30, 2018 and have the necessary physical stamina for the trip (in the trip leaders’ judgment)
All parents of eligible Scouts (per above) who have themselves actively supported the Troop’s activities are also eligible to participate.
Cost: At this time we are estimating a total cost of approximately $850 per person, but this amount is subject to numerous variables such as the cost of gas and food. For planning purposes, we need to know who is going, as shown by our receipt of a nonrefundable $100 deposit not later than February 6, 2018 to reserve a spot on the crew.
All advance spaghetti dinner ticket sales are due at tomorrow’s troop meeting. In order for your scout’s account to be credited they must be turned in at that time. PLEASE turn in any money collected and any unsold tickets in an envelope with your name.
Also, indicate how many adult tickets were sold, how many child tickets were sold and the amount of any donation you received. When scouts hand in a pile of cash with unsold tickets it is VERY difficult to figure out who deserves credit for advance sales.
Setup is this FRIDAY at 6 PM in the cafeteria. Schedules will be distributed tomorrow night at the scout meeting.
We are pleased to welcome 12 new Scouts and their families to Troop 850! The Troop Directory, which is available under the Members Only tab of the website, has now been updated t0 add all of our new members, and all of our new families have been added to the membership roll of this website. Your initial username is simply the Scout’s last name in all small letters (“jones”), and your initial password is the Scout’s first name plus home zip code (“timmy45239”). You should sign on soon and change your username and/or password to something of your own choosing.
Every Scout also has an account in our TroopMaster advancement tracking system. You can check your Scout’s records at anytime by signing onto TroopMaster Web–there is a link for it under the Members Only tab on this website. Your initial username and password for TroopMaster Web is the same as for this website–you can and should sign on and change them.
One other note: If your Scout has his own email address, we encourage them to register as a website member so they will directly get all notifications and posts.
If you have any questions at all, either about www.troop850.org or TroopMaster Web, you can email Chas Hertlein at chas@hertlein.cc.
We’ve improved the Calendar feature on troop850.org! It is now based on Google Calendar and can be viewed in three different modes: weekly, monthly, or agenda. The agenda view is simply a list of all scheduled events without a calendar grid. You can click on any event for more details. And since it is now based on Google Calendar, you can easily import the Troop calendar onto your computer, tablet or smartphone. If you already have a Google account (such as gmail), simply go to the Google page in your internet browser, select the Calendar tab at the top of the page, and from there click Other Calendars–Add a Coworker’s Calendar. Insert the following email address–bsat850@gmail.com–and the Troop calendar will be instantly added to your own Google Calendar. You can also download the Android Google Calendar app onto your Android Smartphone or tablet, or the Google app for iPhone and/or iPad, and similarly import the Troop’s calendar instantly.
Attention all Scout Leaders. The Archdiocese has adopted a new training program for all adults working with our youth. Every leader and adult volunteer must attend a mandatory training session. You will be asked to create your own personal ID and password. Once you complete that you will be asked to select the primary location for work/volunteer/worship and you can select St. Ignatius Loyola (Cincinnati).
You will have some other questions to go through and then you can select St. Ignatius, Tuesday Dec 11 as your training session.

The Troop maintains its advancement and other records in a software program called Troopmaster. Online access to Troopmaster is available through Troopmaster Web–you may have seen a link to this service in the Members Only section of our website. Now you can go directly to Troopmaster Web by using the following web address: http://www.troopmasterweb.com/troop850 And there is now a mobile version of Troopmaster, so you can access your Scout’s records from your smartphone or iPad! You do need a username and password for Troopmaster Web–your username and password for www.troop850.org won’t work. If you’ve forgotten your Troopmaster Web password or username, or have not previously requested access, just drop Chas Hertlein an email at chas@hertlein.cc and he will get you set up.
Troop850.org has been updated! The online calendar is now complete through the end of 2012, and the contact information for Scouts, adults, and merit badge counselors in the Troop (all available under the Members Only menu) is now completely up to date.
The Troop’s recent service project weekend at Wright Patterson Air Force Base was the subject of a nice article in the base newspaper, Skywrighter. Click below to see the article.
