The deadline for signing up for our 2016 high adventure trip to the Boundary Waters in northern Minnesota–January 19–is fast approaching! Click here:
for a fact sheet with all of the details. The logistics of planning this trip are considerable, and we do need to know who will be participating by the deadline, as we will then get to work choosing a route, obtaining the necessary permits (available by lottery only!), and otherwise planning the trip. Chas Hertlein and Dan Rottmueller will be happy to answer any questions.
It’s time to renew the Troop’s “charter” with the BSA and therefore time to renew our individual memberships for 2016. The usual paperwork for this purpose is now in the mail. This is also the time to catch up on required adult training, and in some cases you will find inserts in your mailing with details on your training status.
And speaking of training, the University of Scouting is coming up on November 7 at Princeton High School–click here for details. This is a great opportunity to catch required trainings and for our parents and other volunteers to learn how to be great scout leaders.
It’s time to begin planning for our high adventure trip next summer. We will be returning to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in northern Minnesota for a week of paddling, camping, and fishing. A preliminary fact sheet is attached; hard copies will be available at the Court of Honor this Tuesday. We will show a short video about the Boundary Waters, including some pictures from past trips, and we will be available to answer any and all questions.
Below are 2 documents with details on Merit Badge Challenge (MBC) held in January and February. Read the Troop 850 Letter first. I would like to receive all registration requests for review by November 3rd. Registration opens on October 15th, so the sooner you choose your classes, the better chance of getting your first choices.
We will register together as a Troop, so please follow the instructions on the first document, and do not mail in your registration.
Troop 850 will be attending the Perryville Civil War Battle Reenactment over the weekend of October 2-4. Perryville is located southwest of Lexington, KY about a 2½ hour drive from Cincinnati. We will camp on the battlefield, tour the museum, meet with the soldiers in their authentic encampments, and attend the battle reenactment which includes a Calvary unit. Scouts can even ‘Sign Up’ and practice their close-order drilling with the re-enactors. For more information, go to Perryvillebattlefield.org.
Permission Slips, waivers, and Payments ($30) are due September 29th. However the organizers require a preliminary list of attendees by Sept 20th, so if you are fairly certain you will be attending, fill out a waiver and send me an email or let Mr. Ogilvie know at a Troop meeting.
We will invite the second-year Webelos from Pack 850 to join us on this campout, so let’s have a good turnout of Scouts and Adults!
Troop 850s next campout is the weekend of August 7-9 and we will be canoeing on the Whitewater River near Brookville, Indiana. All Scouts are required to have earned the Swimming merit badge to attend this campout. This is a great opportunity for parents to join their sons for a fun weekend and adults are especially needed to pair up with younger Scouts.
Adults and Scouts must complete a Waiver below. Please complete the permission slip, waiver and turn in by August 4th along with $33 fee per person.
Sign up to sell First Aid kits! With First Aid being one of the foundations of scouting, this fundraiser is a great fit.

When is the sale? Sale starts when you sign up (now!) and will have 4 weeks until turn in at the May 26th Troop meeting. At the end of the sale, products will be ordered and will need to be delivered to your customers.
How do I sign up? You can use the attached order form to start selling immediately. Just print out the order form and start selling.

Troop 850 will be rock climbing in May at Torrent Falls, located near Natural Bridge, KY about 2 ½ hours from Cincinnati. Check out the photos and other information at www.torrentfalls.com. We will be camping nearby at Natural Bridge State Park campgrounds. The cost for this campout will be $45 per person. The climbing fee is $30. The Troop will absorb much of remaining costs – food, camping fees, and transportation.
Everyone who plans on rock climbing must submit a Torrent Falls waiver and all Scouts must complete the Troop permissions slip. Please turn in all required forms with payment by Tuesday, May 12th.
All Troop 850 Scouts and their parents are invited to Austin Pfenninger’s Eagle Court of Honor Saturday April 25th at 12:00 noon in the St Ignatius cafeteria. Read the invitation below for more details and please RSVP by April 20th. Scouts should wear their full Class A uniform.
It is time to place our annual order for new t-shirts. Every Scout or adult planning to attend either summer camp or the high adventure trip will need seven t-shirts, one each of the following colors: lime green, red, tan, grey, orange, yellow, and light blue–a clean t-shirt for every day of the week-long trip. Please take an inventory of your shirts and let me know as soon as possible how many shirts of each color and each size you will need this year. The price is $8 per shirt. Shirts available in adult sizes S M L XL XXL XXXL. I need to submit the order not later than April 22 to ensure we get the shirts in time for summer camp in June, so please respond promptly! Thanks.
