Annual Dutch Oven Campout, Camp Birch

Troop 850’s annual Dutch Oven Campout is scheduled for the weekend of February 10-12th at Camp Birch, Yellow Springs, OH (around the corner from John Bryan park where we do the Bushwhack hike). This campout is consistently a favorite of the Scouts, and adult leaders who attend are consistently impressed with the boy’s culinary acumen. This year we will be staying in the Adam’s building at Birch which is heated.

Scouts will spend Saturday creating a 3 course culinary masterpiece; each patrol will make a main dish, a bread, and a dessert from scratch to share with the judges and the rest of the campers. Parents are welcome to come out and sample the dishes on Saturday or to help create their own Dutch Oven feast. After sampling all of the gourmet cuisine, the judges will have the unenviable task of designating which patrol is the best of the best, while all other participants feast on the Dutch Oven fair.

In addition to meal planning and cooking, time will be set aside to allow for Scouts to pursue advancement requirements, to play cards, and for other group activities which are being planned. So wash your serving spoon, polish your dutch oven, and start your menu planning–Dutch Oven Campout time is here!

Parents who plan to attend the meal on Saturday evening please RSPV by the February 7th meeting so we can plan accordingly.

The trip cost is $40/person.  All Boys Scouts must attend the entire weekend per Troop policy. Please return the permission slip and payment by the February 7th meeting.

Little Miami Canoe Day Trip, September 26th, 2020

Troop 850 will be going on a day trip to Little Miami Canoe Rental on Saturday, September
26th
.  We will be doing the 8-mile trip at a cost of $20/person.
Due to COVID restrictions, we will need to break into groups of 10 or less to be allowed on the river.  Scouting regulations require all scouts to be swimming certified and each group to have at least one adult leader who has their “Safety Afloat” (22m online course) and “Safe Swim Defense” training (26m online course).  Because the smaller group sizes will require us to have more adult leaders, it would be very helpful if parents could attend and drive their own scouts, but, if you are unable to attend with your scout, the attached permission slip has been updated to allow you to give permission for your scout to carpool with others to Little Miami.  It is preferred that households drive separately and meet directly at Little Miami, but, for those who cannot do so, we can organize an earlier time to meet at St. I in the morning (assuming there are adult leaders willing to drive scouts outside of their own household).
We will not have an exact time to meet at Little Miami until we know how many groups we will be forming and call the make the reservations, but plan for the morning, likely around 9 or 10 AM.  The attached waiver and permission slip, as well as the $20/person deposit, are due by the meeting on September 15th. If you are planning to attend, please let me know by email so that we know how many groups and adult leaders we will need, and so that we can put in our reservations ASAP to try to get on the river as close in time to each other as possible on the 26th.
Info about Little Miami Canoe Rental and their COVID procedures can be found at their website: littlemiamicanoe.com
