Dutch Oven Campout — February 8-10, 2019

Troop 850’s annual Dutch Oven Campout is scheduled for the weekend of February 8-10 at Camp Oyo near Portsmouth, Ohio. This campout is consistently a favorite of the Scouts, and parents who attend are consistently impressed with the boy’s culinary acumen. This year we will be staying in the Lang Lodge at Oyo, which has heat, a restroom, and bunks to sleep in.

Scouts will spend Saturday creating a 3 course culinary masterpiece; each patrol will make a main dish, a bread, and a dessert to share with the judges and the rest of the campers. Parents are encouraged to come camping as well, and to help create their own Dutch Oven feast. After sampling all of the gourmet cuisine, the judges will have the unenviable task of designating which patrol is the best of the best, while all other participants feast on the Dutch Oven fair.

In addition to meal planning and cooking, time will be set aside to allow for Scouts to pursue advancement requirements, to play cards, and for other group activities which are being planned. So wash your serving spoon, polish your dutch oven, and start your menu planning–Dutch Oven Campout time is here!

Winter Bushwhack Hike Jan 5, 2019

Join Troop 850 for a day hike at Clifton Gorge State Nature Preserve and John Bryan State Park. This hike is about 10 miles long, going mostly along the Little Miami River which is a National Scenic River. Bring a day pack with a water bottle, and dress in layers so you can stay warm. There are historic things to see along the trail, the scenery along the river is fantastic and if there are ice formations the scenery can be absolutely breathtaking, and you can enjoy spending time with your friends from Troop 850!

November Campout

Our next monthly campout will be the weekend of November 2-4, a backpacking weekend in the Lake Vesuvius Recreation Area of the Wayne National Forest (near Ironton, Ohio). This trip is open to all Scouts and adults with all levels of backpacking experience. We’ll have a challenging route for experienced backpackers and an easier route for novice backpackers. This will be a great opportunity to see what backpacking is all about if you’ve never done it before. For those lacking equipment, don’t let that stop you! The Troop has a collection of loaner equipment, and we know where else to borrow things if need be.

Permission slips are due October 30. Chas Hertlein can answer any questions, and we’ll be covering backpacking at the next couple of meetings.

Orienteering Campout at Camp Friedlander, Oct 12-14 2018

Troop 850 will again be participating in the Greater Cincinnati Scout Orienteering Camporee at Camp Friedlander. We went on this campout last year, it was very well organized and fun, and the Scouts have chosen to go again this year. At the campout, Scouts will have the opportunity to learn a lot about orienteering, and Scouts who attended last year will be able to build on last year’s experience. Scouts will compete in timed orienteering courses with recognition for the fastest. There will also be a night orienteering activity. This event is open to other Boy Scout troops as well as to Girl Scout troops and Venture crews, and adults attending with the youth are also encouraged to participate in the competitions.

Scouts will be expected to bring a compass, a whistle, a headlamp or flashlight, shoes suitable for hiking/running, and usual weekend campout gear.

If you plan on attending, please return the Permission Slip on or before October 1; if you register after October 1 but before the 10th, you can still register but the cost increases by $10.

For those attending, additional information is available on the primary Dan Beard web site for the activity here, at the bottom of the page are links to the leader’s guide and to some orienteering learning links.
