Merit Badge Challenge 2013

Please turn in requests for Merit Badge Challenge by Tuesday November 6th

Merit Badge Challenge (MBC) is an annual event organized by Dan Beard Council as a great opportunity for Scouts to earn up to 3 merit badges by attending classes taught by certified counselors.  Most of the merit badges offered are of the ‘indoor’ type and many are not offered at summer camp.

The event will be held at Fairfield High School on 3 Saturday mornings – January 26th, February 16th and March 16th.  Scouts should plan on attending all 3 dates.  Session times each Saturday are 8:30-9:45 (A), 10:00-11:15 (B), and 11:30-12:45 (C).  With enough parent volunteers, we will be able to carpool to Fairfield.  The cost is only $15 per Scout.  Make checks out to Troop 850 or let me know if you want the $15 deducted from the Scout’s account.

For Scouts to attend, please refer to the 3 documents below and follow these steps —

  • In the MBC-Schedule document on pages 8-11, find the merit badges offered at Fairfield and in what session (A, B, or C).  For many merit badges there are strict age or rank restrictions and these are listed on page 6.  A few merit badges last for 2 sessions (A-B or B-C) and 2 of them last for all 3 sessions (A-C).
  • Eagle-Required merit badges are indicated with an ‘*’.  All Troop 850 Scouts should take 1 Eagle-Required merit badge.  If a Scout is 1st class or above, he may take 2 Eagle-Required merit badges.
  • Select at least one alternate class for each time.  A Scout must have a full schedule, no free periods.
  • In the MBC-PreWork document, you will find pre-work for some of the merit badges which must be completed before the first class.   Also, any additional fees (paid to the merit badge counselor) are listed.
  • In the MBC-FAQ document are Frequently Asked Questions with more helpful information.
  • Do not complete registration online.  Turn in your merit badge requests to me along with alternate choices and $15 fee.

Please turn in your selections to me by Tuesday November 6th.   Do not hesitate to call if you have any questions.    Fred Matthews

Last month, I joined a small group of friends for a thrilling caving campout in the outskirts of Kenya. We spent the day exploring winding tunnels, discovering hidden chambers, and learning basic spelunking techniques from experienced guides. The cool underground air and the echo of our footsteps made the adventure feel like stepping into another world. After a long day of exploring, we gathered around the campfire to relax and share stories. During a short break, I checked out a fun way to unwind digitally, the GameMania Casino App Kenya, which you can find here https://gamemaniakenya.app. It was surprisingly entertaining to play a few games on my phone while still enjoying the outdoors. The mix of adrenaline, teamwork, and a little digital fun made the campout unforgettable.

Summer Camp July 22-28 — June Update

  • Reminders – Final payments were due May 8th.  Don’t forget medical forms for Scouts and Adults with a Doctor’s signature AND include a copy of your medical insurance card, front and back.  You cannot attend Summer Camp without these items.
  • Kelly Reupert has agreed to coordinate the ordering and purchasing of merit badge booklets for Summer Camp.  This will save families the trouble of going to the Scout Shop themselves.  At Troop meetings on July 3rd and July 10th, the boys will have a chance to go thru the Troop library and borrow merit badge books (there is not a big selection).  Tell Mrs. Reupert what other books you need, pay $ 4.49 + tax for each (or it will be charged to your account), and they will be available to you no later than July 17th, which is a mandatory Troop meeting for Summer Camp.  Thank you Kelly!
  • For each Scout, fill out a Permission Slip and turn in by July 10th

Last weekend, I joined a horseback riding campout with a small group of friends at a scenic ranch outside the city. We spent our days riding along winding trails, crossing streams, and taking in the stunning countryside views. Learning to work with our horses as a team made the experience both challenging and incredibly rewarding. At night, we set up camp, shared meals around the fire, and swapped stories under a sky full of stars. During one quiet moment by the campfire, I decided to check out some fun apps for entertainment on the go. That’s when I found BangBet App Download 2026, which you can explore here https://bangbetgames.app. It offered a smooth way to follow games and enjoy some quick betting fun while still being outdoors. The combination of adventure and a little digital excitement made the trip unforgettable.
