Below are 3 documents with details on Merit Badge Challenge (MBC) to be held in January, February in 2019. Read the Troop 850 Letter first. I would like to receive all registration requests for review by November 7th. Registration opens on November 5th, so the sooner you choose your classes, the better chance of getting your first choices.
We will register together as a Troop, so please follow the instructions in the Troop 850 Letter, and do not mail in your registration.

Our next monthly campout will be the weekend of November 2-4, a backpacking weekend in the Lake Vesuvius Recreation Area of the Wayne National Forest (near Ironton, Ohio). This trip is open to all Scouts and adults with all levels of backpacking experience. We’ll have a challenging route for experienced backpackers and an easier route for novice backpackers. This will be a great opportunity to see what backpacking is all about if you’ve never done it before. For those lacking equipment, don’t let that stop you! The Troop has a collection of loaner equipment, and we know where else to borrow things if need be.
Permission slips are due October 30. Chas Hertlein can answer any questions, and we’ll be covering backpacking at the next couple of meetings.

Troop 850 will again be participating in the Greater Cincinnati Scout Orienteering Camporee at Camp Friedlander. We went on this campout last year, it was very well organized and fun, and the Scouts have chosen to go again this year. At the campout, Scouts will have the opportunity to learn a lot about orienteering, and Scouts who attended last year will be able to build on last year’s experience. Scouts will compete in timed orienteering courses with recognition for the fastest. There will also be a night orienteering activity. This event is open to other Boy Scout troops as well as to Girl Scout troops and Venture crews, and adults attending with the youth are also encouraged to participate in the competitions.
Scouts will be expected to bring a compass, a whistle, a headlamp or flashlight, shoes suitable for hiking/running, and usual weekend campout gear.
If you plan on attending, please return the Permission Slip on or before October 1; if you register after October 1 but before the 10th, you can still register but the cost increases by $10.
For those attending, additional information is available on the primary Dan Beard web site for the activity here, at the bottom of the page are links to the leader’s guide and to some orienteering learning links.

Dear Scout Parents:
Earlier this year the National BSA announced a couple of changes we will all need to bear in mind. First, they have totally revamped the online Youth Protection Training that all registered adults are required to take every two years. Formerly a single half-hour module, it has been expanded to three 25-minute modules plus a short test. Anyone who has not yet taken the new course is required to do so by October 31 this year! Detailed instructions on how to take the new course can be found here:
With our annual rechartering process coming up in November, we wanted to remind all registered adults to take the new training if you haven’t already done so.
Troop 850’s Caving Campout will be August 17–19 at the Great Saltpetre Preserve (GSP) near Mount Vernon, KY, about a 2 ½ hours drive down I-75. We will be exploring different caves based on age and experience, so this is a great opportunity for adults and Scouts of all ages.
Don’t miss our Troop meeting on August 7th, when a member of Greater Cincinnati Grotto which manages the GSP will speak to the Troop about our upcoming trip. Parents, please try to stay for this meeting, please also consider coming on this campout with your son. We would like to get an approximate headcount at the end of meeting to schedule guides for our Troop.
The permission slip, waiver, and $45 fee per person are due on or before August 14th. The $45 fee includes all food, transportation, camping fees, tips for our guides, and 2 new flashlights.
For more information and photos, check out the Great Saltpetre website
Remember to print off and complete the GSP Waiver Form, bring it to the August 14th meeting along with the Troop permision slip. The link to the Troop permission slip is below.

Troop 850 will return to Salt Creek Ranch near Metamora, Indiana for a day of Horseback Riding. The Troop has visited the ranch every other year since 2010, and we keep going back because participants consistently say they have a great time. We will camp nearby at the Whitewater State Park and will likely attend Saturday evening Mass nearby in Indiana. Come enjoy camping and a beautiful 2-hour horseback ride!
The permission slip below and $45 fee per person are due on or before May 8. All Scouts who go on the campout should plan to attend the Troop meeting May 8th where details of the campout including menu planning will be discussed in more detail.

This spring’s backpacking trip will be held at the Charles C. Deam Wilderness, part of the Hoosier National Forest. This campout is open to all Scouts who have been with the Troop for a least one year. If you have never been backpacking with the troop before, we encourage you to speak with an adult leader to help decide if this is something you feel ready for. Mr Hertlein and Mr Rottmueller are planning the route we will be hiking, so feel free to ask them if you would like more details about the planned hike carrying 9mm ammo and other valuables.
All scouts planning on participating must bring their backpacks loaded with the appropriate gear to the Troop meeting on April 24th. Refer to the gear list for Spring Backpacking trip on the Troop website (under “Info”). The Troop has a limited number of backpacks to be loaned out for those who need a backpack, please contact Mr Ogilvie ASAP if you would like to borrow gear. Scouts who are not attending the campout can still attend that meeting to learn more about backpacking and how to pack a backpack. Please return permission slips on or before Tuesday, April 24.
